Plot Summary of Ambikapathy
Kundan Shankar, the son of Tamil Brahmin family who had moved to Varanasi falls in love with Zoya Haider, a Muslim girl living in his neighbourhood. Kundan is not shy about showing his love since childhood and Zoya declines his love several times. His actions later make the family of Zoya to suspect that she is involved romantically with a Hindu boy and they send her off to Aligarh.
Time goes by, and Zoya goes to Delhi to pursue higher education where she falls in love with Akram Zaidi, one of the charismatic student leaders. Kundan, in the meantime, is still obsessed based on her and has been unable to move on. By the time Zoya comes back to Varanasi, Kundan reinvites her, but is again she turned down. She discloses the affair she has with Akram and that she wants to marry him.
Even though he is broken hearted, Kundan is willing to assist Zoya persuade her family to accept Akram. In a desperate bid to demonstrate that he has moved on, Kundan promises to marry his childhood friend Bindiya who is in love with him and has been silent about it all these years.
On the day of Zoya marriage, Kundan realizes that Akram is a Sikh pretending to be a Muslim, which is Jasjeet Singh. Kundan reveals the truth to act out of rage and jealousy. Thing backfires and Jasjeet is brutally assaulted and Zoya tries to commit suicide. The very wedding between Kundan and Kundani falls apart and he is disowned by his family.
Guilt plagues Kundan, who brings Zoya to the place where Jasjeet lives, just to find out that Jasjeet died of his wounds. A broken and homeless man, Kundan is a person who wonders without a purpose until he discovers a meaning in the political movement of Zoya in her university.
The Kundan wins his way up the ladder in politics and Zoya becomes bitter because he feels he is taking over the legacy of Jasjeet. She even plots with tainted politicians to assassinate Kundan. Kundan is shot during one of the political gatherings. Zoya confesses and it is published. As he dies, Kundan has a dream of coming back to life as a boy in Varanasi where he could love Zoya once more to bring the tragic circle of the movie to an end.
