Plot Summary Of Yodha

It is also one of the earliest to provide its audience with a direct rush into one of the most stressful situations imaginable at the same time: a plane hijacking in the sky, Yodha (translated as Warrior): a 2024 Bollywood action thriller. The first action movie directed by one of the two novice duo, Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha, is the first Dharma Production movie that aims at producing an action franchise that will ultimately be anchored on an actor called Sidharth Malhotra as the main protagonist and anchor of the series to come.

The novel is a follow up of the life of a para commando, who is trained to fight both on land, air and in the water and a hyper proud member of the elite team, Yodha Task Force- a team that was established by his late father, Major Surender Katyal. When the task force is dissolved because of some unsuccessful rescue operation which makes Arun lose his rank as well as his reputation, he simply fades into the realm of the civilian, as a betrayer of the government and its citizens. Years on when he is flying on a daily commercial flight, he is in the middle of hijacking that has been orchestrated by the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists and because he is neither an agent of the government nor a government figure and does not have any identification, he must fight his way out to save the people and redeem himself.

The movie is also significantly rooted in the actual history of the events in the Indian aviation history the most significant one being the hijacking of the Indian Airlines Flight 814 in 1999. Sagar Ambre, the director himself, wrote it in screen and the plot is the appropriate composition of patriotism and military pride and airiness.

Director and Producer

Yodha was directed by Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha who had previously worked as assistant director in high budget action films such as War and Kick. Yodha is a movie that is the maiden film by the two film-makers. That they were offered the launch of a planned franchise by Dharma Productions is an indication that the studio trusts them in terms of their technical prowess in the genre of action films.

The production team of the Dharma productions which produce the film in collaboration with Amazon Prime Video and Mentor Disciple entertainment are Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Shashank Khaitan. It was the first production of Malhotra with Shashank Khaitan who had revealed the Bollywood career of Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in the earlier films and the movie was a unofficial trilogy of the Dharma debuts.

Jishnu Bhattacharjee, Aarif Sheikh and John Stewart Eduri have performed cinematography, editing and background score respectively. The list that involved Vishal Mishra, Tanishk Bagchi, B Praak, Jaani and Aditya Dev voiced the songs in the film.

Cast Of Yodha And Their Roles

Cast of Yodha
S.NoCast Of Yodha
1Sidharth Malhotra
2Priyamvada Priya Katyal
3Disha Patani
4Ronit Roy
5Tanuj Virwani

Sidharth Malhotra is in the role of major Arun Katyal.

The film Malhotra is recognized as the undisputed centre of gravity. One of the sons of the founder of Yodha task force is Arun, who is a decorated para commando who was trained in all the three areas of combat and married an intelligence officer Priya. When he is sent out to fail in a mission he is falsely discharged and upon returning to live an obscure life he is called back to the mission by the hijack. Malhotra transfers his credibility of Shershaah, which he had established long ago in the film and adds a believability to the role and physical action scenes a reasonable breadth of plausibility.

Priyamvada Priya Katyal is performed by Raashii Khanna.

Khanna acts as a wife of a witness to an intelligence officer called Arun who is his husband. Suspension ruins their marriage and she leaves him taking his mother away. It is the first time in nine years, since Khanna plays a role in a Bollywood film (Madras Cafe* (2013)). Her personality is the emotional hint to the individual interests of the film.

Disha Patani as Tanya Sharma

Patani is an air traveling professional, another occupant of the hijack plane, who coincidentally is the unprincipled friend of Arun in the air. Her personality offers the technical skill that the film desperately requires in terms of the airplane. Patani also introduces her typical screen presence to a character that fits the action-based storyline of the movie.

Ronit Roy as Brigadier Sinha

Roy is the senior military man, the head of the operation of answering the hijacking on land. It is his personality that represented the institutional power that overturned and had not even an alternative but to accept the rogue decisions of Arun at 35,000 feet.

Tanuj Virwani as Sameer Khan

Virwani is the actor who is introduced as the best friend of Arun with the name of Sameer and officer of Yodha task force. They have been established at the very beginning of the movie and the gloomy veil of loyalty of Sameer to Arun turns out to be the parallel running subplot to the central hijack crisis.

The cast is backed by Sammy Jonas Heaney and Sharik Khan who are employed to fill in the cast on the military and antagonist side of the story.

Language and Target Audience

Yodha was shot and released only in Hindi and was aimed at the mainstream Bollywood audience which currently has the taste oriented towards action homegrown franchises in the post-Uri and Shershaah period. The film was selectively edited to suit the audience within the age group of 16 to 45 who are responsive to the patriotic action films that are centered on the army and the special forces characters. The most recognizable nucleus audience that the film had was individuals who enjoyed Malhotra in his previous appearance in Sherahaha.

Release Date And OTT

Yodha did not reach out to the cinemas that easily. Multiple delays occurred in the release of the film during more than a year before its eventual release in theatres on March 15, 2024. It was later released on streaming on Amazon Prime Video, starting May 10, 2024, about two months after its premiere in cinemas.

Box Office Collection

Yodha was not performing as per the commercial standards. On the first day the film received net business of about 4.1 crore, on the second day (Saturday), it received 5.75 crore and on the first Sunday it received 7 crore. But the seemingly unforeseen crashing weekday collections Day 4 collections had been cut down to 2.15 crore by 69 per cent, which demonstrated poor word-of-mouth legs on the film. Week 1 the net India net collection was 25.25 crore.

The second and the third weeks would only raise 7.95 crore and 1.65 crore respectively. The movie earned an aggregate of some 35.56 crore in India net and India gross of some 42 crores and overseas gross of some 11.5 crores with a total of approximately 53.5 crores worldwide. The film was highly underestimated as a commercial disaster with an approximate cost of production 50-70 crore and 10 crore of marketing expenses.

Rating And Reviews

Yodha is rated 58 percent critics rating with an average rating of 4.8 out of 10 on Rotten Tomatoes (out of 12 reviews). The massive praise of the reviews was to appreciate the effort put by Sidharth Malhotra to fulfil the physical aspect of the role and the fact that the movie had its crowd-scenes and actually action scenes that worked. It has been condemned as having unsound reasoning in its screenplay, being too swift in portraying serious acting-outs, over reliant on nationalism and posing questions instead of attracting characters. The opinion was unanimous that the movie was a mundane yet an acceptable addition to the then emerging Indian action military film.

Conclusion

Yodha performed poorly in theatres regarding commercials but it was a big leap towards the aim of developing an independent Indian action franchise by Dharma Productions. Its agreement with Amazon Prime Video also meant that the film had massive second-window viewership and as such, the film was viewed by far more people on streaming than its theater performance indicated. It is yet unknown whether the studio will or will not Greenlight a follow-up but performance of Sidharth Malhotra has secured the star of the franchise his name on the table.
