Jake Gyllenhaal plays the lead character named ‘Dalton’, and his character is a former UFC fighter. Dalton takes up the job as a bouncer at a bar in the famous Florida Keys. Although his job starts off really simple and mundane, it slowly turns into a dangerous battle against criminals and corruption.
Plot Summary
The movie revolves around ex-UFC fighter Elwood Dalton, who hustles around by scamming opponents in underground matches. The Florida Keys has a renowned bar that is on the periphery and Frankie, the owner of the bar, hires him as a head bouncer at her chaotic Road House bar. She offers him good money, around $5000 a week, and this is probably too much money for Dalton to turn down. He is hired to tame the rowdy crowds, which actually ends up creating chaos in the bar environment.
After a near-death scrape that ends with a train wrecking his car, Dalton ends up going south and takes the bus.
On his journey, Dalton bonds with the locals, like several people like teenager Charlie and her father, Stephen. At the bar, Dalton ends up crushing a biker gang sent by a rich thug, Ben Brandt, who wants the land for his own condo plans. He ends up driving the beaten bikers to the hospital himself and meeting Ellie. By this time, Dalton is living on Frankie’s old houseboat, and he trains several bouncers and has started winning the hearts of several people in the town.
However, things get a little heated up when Ben Brandit sends a psycho enforcer named Knox after Dalton. He ends up surviving the ambush and begins dating Ellie. He also dodges a crooked sheriff and ultimately uncovers Brandt’s money laundering schemes.
The climax of the movie is shown on a boat with bombs, crocs and shootouts. Dalton rescues his date, completely torches up Brandt’s luxury yacht and leaves Knox floating in the water.
In the end he is shown in a dilemma about whether he wants to continue running from his past, or embrace his new role of good vs evil.

Within the first two weeks, the movie boasted of 80million+ views, thus topping the charts globally.
Amazon actually called it one of the biggest global launches ever, for a movie. Reviews And Rating
The film critics had a lot of mixed opinions about the movie. A lot of people loved the energy, the humor, and the intense fighting choreography. However, this does not mean that the movie came without its drawbacks. Audiences felt that the movie was highly predictable and they agreed that Jake was the ultimate anchor of the film. He brought both toughness and emotional depth to Dalton’s character, thus bringing him justice.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film sits at 59% fresh, and audiences also loved McGregor’s sequence and acting.
The Times of India gave it a 3.5/5 rating and called it a ‘wild ride’. Despite all the criticism and comments about the predictable storyline, the movie performed well. It managed to build a strong following among the action-enthusiast fans.
Movie Highlights
- Possibly one of the biggest wins and highlights of the film is the intense fight choreography. The film uses some realistic fighting combat techniques, which is actually inspired by mixed martial arts (MMA). This makes the action scenes feel real, authentic, and of course really cool.
- Jake Gyllenhaal had trained extensively for the role, and he even appeared in real UFC events to be more authentic. His physical transformation and dedication actually helped make the fight scenes look more believable.
- If that’s not enough, Conor McGregor’s fame as a former UFC champion alone is impressive enough to call the shots. Those who are fight and action thriller enthusiasts would love the movie just for the fight sequences.
Comparison With The original Movie 1989 Road House
The Road House (1989 Film) starred Patrick Swayze, and it became a cult classic for all the right reasons. The newer version follows the base, but there are some core differences. For instance, the original focused on a professional who cleans up a violent bar in a small town. The new version tweaks the background of Dalton to that of a former UFC fighter. The remake features more intense and violent fight choreography than the original.
However, it still pays homage to the old version’s theme of wanting to protect a community from corruption and violence.
Road House 2: sequel of Road House(2024 film)
A sequel to the 2024 action film Road House, called Road House 2, was being developed on the basis of its successful showing on Amazon Prime Video.
