Plot
It’s the tale of a well-known foodie, Hollis Shaw, who is struggling to deal with the sudden and tragic death of her husband, Matthew. A way to heal, Hollis decides to bring a unique idea she found on the Web: a “Five-Star Weekend. Rather than an event, she invites four women, representing her different eras of life: her childhood best friend, Tatum; her college roommate, Dru-Ann; one of her motherhood days pals, Brooke; and a stranger who she met on her blog named Gigi who has a very private secret. This is supposed to be a fun and comforting weekend, but something doesn’t add up. Every woman brings her own secret challenges, revelations and unspoken heartaches to Nantucket. The wine has set out, and old patterns clash head on with new ones; personalities clash, and old secrets bubble to the surface. But as Hollis sorts out the turmoil of her guests, she’s forced to examine all of that upheaval in the wake of her loss, and really think about what she wants for herself in the future. Hollis needs to deal with her loss, to move on, and so she decides to throw a special, extravagant weekend at her Nantucket home. She invites four women to join her representing the various stages of her life: childhood, college, motherhood, and an online friend. The getaway offers her the opportunity to meet up with old friends, but soon she realizes that Hollis is not going to be able to heal her deep emotional issues and mend complicated relationship issues by putting everyone together. The more time the women spend together, the more Gigi gets wrapped up in their talks, secrets and emotions, while attempting to maintain her cover. Dru-Ann has a special knowledge of Hollis’s past, due to her long friendship with him. But, as with all things, it brings back memories of what has changed in their lives over the years. As the retreat gets under way, old turmoil and unsolved issues from their past are brought to the surface, challenging her long-standing friendship with Hollis. Tatum is an essential support to the stellar ensemble cast, and Chloë Sevigny’s sharp and witty comedic and deeply emotional performance is a star in its own right.

The family narrative is a key emotional thread of the show, and is used to explore the fractured mother/daughter relationship as the camera lens records a raw documentary of the retreat. Her presence brings the two worlds of the weekend event in high society together with the family’s long term personal trauma on Nantucket. Thoughtfully supported by a standout youthful and emotionally charged performance from Harlow Jane, the show’s themes of grief, growing up, and familial healing all get beautifully anchored.

His presence gives the series the opportunity to investigate the ways in which the actions of the past can affect an individual’s life many years later, as well as the way in which relationships from the past can have an impact on a person’s life many years later.
